Collisions can result in vehicles being taken out of service, injuries, service disruptions and significant liabilities to transit agencies.  Given the challenges associated with operating passenger transportation in both confined urban corridors and higher speed rural environments, the study and reduction of collisions is a primary focus of the FTSON.  New technologies, training and situational awareness are all emerging as ways to combat collisions with fixed objects.  Laws such as Yield-to-Bus may hold promise as tools to reduce rear end and side collisions with other vehicles in traffic.
